Looking for your own DIY homemade pumpkin pie spice blend? The good news is it is so easy to make at home, you will never need to buy the pre-mixed stuff again!
Pumpkin pie spice is maybe the best flavor in the Autumn season (I’m looking at you pumpkin spice lattes). While containing exactly zero amount of pumpkin, the flavors are so embedded in us that when we taste these cinnamon-spiced treats we immediately think *pumpkin*.
So even if you are not enjoying pumpkin pie, you can still use this pumpkin spice blend for so many other things – don’t limit yourself to pumpkin desserts! Pop it in your morning coffee, use in an apple pie for a little variety or sub the standard cinnamon in your cinnamon rolls.
Spices
What goes into a pumpkin pie spice? It’s probably all ingredients that you have in your pantry!
While the ingredients are simple enough, the ratio is key! I prefer a little stronger ginger “kick” than most of the blends available.
- Cinnamon
- Ginger
- Nutmeg
- Cloves
- Allspice
All of these spices can be found ground already, but I do like to grind my own nutmeg. Using a microplane is really easy and the nutmeg tastes even better.
Storing
I use glass spice jars like these for all my spices so they keep better but also so they last longer than in the plastic.
The amount below makes about 4 tablespoons. Feel free to scale it up to store with your other spices so it is always on hand or scale it down for your recipe.
Uses for Pumpkin Pie Spice
- Use in pumpkin pie of course!
- Pumpkin desserts – pumpkin coffee cake, pumpkin cheesecake, or pumpkin cream puffs.
- Substitute in recipes with cinnamon, like cinnamon rolls or apple scones.
- Add to your morning coffee
- Add a bit to your whipped cream toppings for something unique
